The TITAN fully automatic strapping machine for slit coils on a turnstile does not only do the strapping much faster than in a manual process, it is also much more precise in the positioning of the straps in the centres of the single rings. On top it uses much less strap in its automatic mode compared to a manual process.
Part of the strapping machine is a laser scanner, which is mounted on a servo-driven axis along the width of the coil. This laser scanner travels along the coil right after its loading onto the turnstile and detects the coil edges as well as the slits in the coil. So the exact positions and widths of the single rings of the coil are clearly known. Additionally, the diameter of the coil is measured by a linear position transducer on the hold down device on the turnstile.
With these measurements, the strapping machine can be positioned exactly in the centre of each ring of the slit coil. This is a prerequisite for a perfectly centred strapping but not automatically a guarantor for it.
In addition, strap positioning arms need to assist with the strap centring on each ring. The strap positioning arms are moved from their home positions at the strap channels to the surface of the ring and they guide the strap during its retraction from the strap channels onto the ring. Together with the strapping head, which is also positioned in the centre of the ring, the strap positioning arms guarantee a perfectly centred strapping everywhere around the circumference of the ring and this on the smallest widths of rings.
